Honda
CRV
Oil
Fires
Reports
from
the
field
indicate
that
2003-04
Honda
CRV
models
may
be
susceptible
to
oil
fires
following
an
oil
change.
The
problem
is
apparently
widespread
enough
that
the
National
Highway
Traffic
Safety
Administration
(NHTSA)
has
opened
an
investigation
into
the
matter.
The
suspected
cause
of
the
problem
is
an
oil
filter
gasket
that
sticks
to
the
engine
block
during
filter
replacement.
The
gasket
on
the
new
filter
then
fails
to
make
a
proper
seal,
and
oil
sprays
onto
the
exhaust
manifold
resulting
in
a
fire. Repair
shops
servicing
these
vehicles
are
cautioned
to
ensure
that
the
old
oil
filter
gasket
is
completely
removed,
and
the
sealing
surface
is
completely
clean,
before
installing
a
new
filter.
